Operation LifesaverOperation Lifesaver is an nonprofit, nationwide public education program dedicated to eliminating collision, deaths, and injuries at highway-rail intersections and on railroad rights-of-way.
It is sponsored cooperatively by a wide variety of partners, including federal, state and local government agencies, highway safety and transportation organizations, and the nations railroads.
To accomplish its mission, Operation Lifesaver promotes 3 Es:
Education - Operation Lifesaver strives to increase public awareness about the dangers around the rails. The program seeks to educate both drivers and pedestrians to make safe decisions at crossings and around railroad tracks. Our volunteer speakers, called Presenters, are available, free of charge, to provide important safety information to professional truck and bus drivers, school bus drivers, drivers education classes, elementary school students, law enforcement and emergency responders, and other civic organizations.
Enforcement - Operation Lifesaver promotes active enforcement of traffic laws relating to crossing signs and signals and private property laws related to trespassing.
Engineering - Operation Lifesaver encourages continued engineering research and innovation to improve the safety of railroad crossings.

National Train Day at Philadelphia 30th Street station was a big success. In the exhibitors area there were well over 2000 persons who viewed the information provided by the different exhibitors.

The nations railroads, related federal, state, and local governments, business, railroad suppliers, labor, civic and community leaders and other concerned safety professionals are all part of state programs. Any person or organization is welcome to join a state program to work at the local level doing whatever you can to educate motorists that they need to exercise greater care when driving across highway-rail grade crossings.
Operation Lifesaver's mission is to end collisions, deaths and injuries at highway-rail grade crossings and along railroad rights of way. A national network of certified volunteers provides free presentations on rail safety.

To improve security Norfolk Southern railways have developed security programs to engage citizens’ participation in reporting suspicious or criminal activity to Railroad Police.
As a Protect the Line member, you will help us keep an eye out for potential issues relating to equipment maintenance, track obstructions, trespassing, and vandalism, and report those issues to Norfolk Southern Police. Together, we can protect the line from incidents that threaten security and safety.
